As a bi-cultural family, it's extremely important for us not only to teach Jack about his own heritage but about other cultures around the world. I recently discovered Hartlyn Kids, a children's book publishing company who's mission is to expose children and their parents to diverse cultures around the world.
Hartlyn Kids is a globally inspired children's book company that allows children to travel the globe by reading books written by local authors. The goal of the company is to help children develop empathy and tolerance for other cultures and beliefs by providing a day in the life of a child in another part of the world.
I had the pleasure of receiving The Bamboo Dance by Cress Sta last month and it has become a very special addition to Jack's ever growing book collection. The Bamboo Dance follows Paco and Diego, two boys from the Philippines as they learn their country's traditional dance - Tinikling. Beautifully illustrated by Lisa Butler with bright and colorful images, this book also teaches valuable lessons about friendship, encouragement and hard work.
Included with each book is a free passport to help children organize and keep track of all of their travels around the world! Also included is a sticker "stamp" to mark their visit to the featured country. In addition, a learning tools section to help children review the cultural material previously covered is also available.
