The Top 5 Things You Must Do Before Moving in to a New Home

Moving into a new home is supposed to be fun. This is because moving into a new neighborhood brings new experiences. But moving in is also stressful if you have not prepared yourself accordingly. Even if you are in a rush, there are some things that can only be done when the house is still unoccupied. Besides that, such preparations require you to set some money aside. This is because you will do an all-round makeover and you will have to hire a few people to help you. Here is a list of the things that should be done in advance.

1. Install New Locks
Whether you are buying or renting a house, it’s recommended that you replace the existing locks with a new set. This will ensure that the previous occupants or the estate managers will not be able to access your home unauthorized. However, a tenant is required in some states to submit a copy of his keys to the landlord. This is because the landlord might want to evacuate your belongings if you don’t settle your rent arrears.

2. Renovate the Walls and Ceilings
If the paint on the walls and the ceilings is totally worn out, you should consider repainting them. This will help in hiding the cracks and holes that are on the ceilings and the walls. Painting can be a messy affair so it should be done when there are no things inside the house. Besides that, the paint may still be in good shape. But if you don’t like the colors used, you can apply the colors that appeal to you. In such a case, you should budget for a painter because you may not have the time. If time is not on your side, you should avoid using different colors in every room. This is because every coat of paint will require time to dry before a fresh layer can be applied.

3. Get the Carpet Cleaned
Most homeowners and tenants prefer to replace the carpet that they find in a new house. At the end of the day, you want the house to reflect on your taste. On the other hand, moving out from an old home causes the carpet to get dirty as people remove things out of the house. You should therefore get the carpet cleaned up before fixing it on the floor of the new house. In fact, you should hire a professional carpet cleaning company such as Sunrise Chem-Dry to do the job because they have advanced cleaning tools and equipment. While the carpet is being washed, you should make arrangements for the entire house to be cleaned up. Other areas to be cleaned include the drawers, shelves, countertops, tables and utensils.

4. Decide How Things will be Arranged
Once the house has been cleaned up, you should take time to plan where things will be put. If you plan well, you will be able to reserve enough space for everything. You should plan for every room. When you walk into any room, you should stand in one corner and visualize how you things can fit perfectly without making the house look congested.

5. Hang Window Curtains
The window curtains should be installed before moving your stuff inside the house. If you don’t have curtains, you can opt to install some blinds. This will help in preventing passersby from peeping through the window. Besides that, if you have to use the curtains that you found in the house, it’s recommended that you wash them thoroughly to remove the dust that may have accumulated.
